The Yungang Grottoes are a collection of more than 51,000 statues carved into the sandstone caves in China’s Shanxi province. Few people are able to see this UNESCO Heritage Site wonder in person, and its age and natural decay mean it will not last forever. But today, archaeologists are taking half a million images of the site every month, which can be used to create three-dimensional replicas, to preserve history for future generations.
